WELCOME!
In March 2004, over 70 community leaders began to discuss ways to revitalize downtown Youngstown
by building upon the success of Streetscape over the last seven years. Since 1998, Streetscape, now a committee of the
Youngstown Cityscape, invested over $200,000 in the downtown landscape. Approximately 200 volunteers participate
annually in Streetscape’s spring landscaping event.
As a result of the community leaders’ discussions, a new organization was founded-- Youngstown Cityscape. This new
organization that was created to expand Streetscape’s role in the community.
The goal of Youngstown Cityscape is to revitalize Youngstown’s downtown and gateways through:
- Beautification:
including landscaping, litter clean-up and overall maintenance
- Education:
fostering community awareness of the importance of beautification and historic preservation in an
effort to revitalize Youngstown
- Historic Preservation
programming to increase community knowledge and encourage continued
revitalization of historic Youngstown structures
Youngstown Cityscape will create additional support for the Streetscape committee’s efforts to improve the visual appeal of Youngstown.
In addition Youngstown Cityscape will oversee the Education/Historic Preservation committee, which will foster awareness about the importance
of preserving historic structures in the City.
A major impetus for the expanded mission and vision of Youngstown Cityscape relates to the desire on the part of the
members of the organization to support the implementation of the Youngstown 2010 Comprehensive Plan. A theme that has
clearly emerged in the 2010 plan is the need for the community to address the “broken windows” syndrome. Time and again
during the 2010 planning sessions held during the summer in eleven neighborhoods, residents stated a desire for the
city to clean up, repair, and beautify the community.
Youngstown Cityscape, as part of its mission, will seek to
rally volunteers and residents to take action to improve the appearance of the City. In announcing its intentions now,
it is hoped that other volunteer groups will come together to support the implementation of Youngstown 2010 scheduled
for released in early 2005.
Downtown Youngstown Revitalization, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization, doing business as Youngstown Cityscape. Youngstown Cityscape
is managed by a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee and Committee Chairs. Meetings are scheduled on a quarterly basis. The 4 key
committees are: Streetscape (beautification), Education/Historic Preservation, Finance/Fund Development and By-Laws/Governance.
